Blender Ridicules the Sex Pistols

by User Imagedshively on October 9th, 2007

You may recall the post I did awhile back, when a music critic called The Clash “lame.” If you don’t, that’s why I linked it for ya!

In any case, Blender - an online magazine that advertises itself as “the ultimate guide to music and more,” has decided that the Sex Pistols Nevermind the Bollocks… deserves a spot on the “10 Most Overpraised Records Ever” list.

Hold the phone, please.

While I can agree with some of the records they chose for the list, I am vehemently against including the Sex Pistols. If they had at least attempted to explain with any depth or clarity why they felt one of the most influential punk rock albums of all time should be included on this arbitrary list, then perhaps I would be a little more open minded towards their opinion.

HOWEVER…

Nearly every other album on Blender’s list clarified why whoever made this list in the first place put that album there. In other words, their opinions are thoughtful… not so with Nevermind the Bollocks. No, this is what Blender had to say about the album:

“You’re ugly! God is dead! Jesus is a leprechaun! The queen has a penis! We hate everything! Blah blah blah blah blah blah! Blah! Blah!”

If you’re going to ridicule an album that helped define an entire genre of music, then please at least add some thoughtful commentary when you explain why it’s so overpraised.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe the Sex Pistols were overrated? Why or why not?

    Here’s my take…
They only had one album…that changed modern music forever. As you say, it helped define and entire genre of music. Perhaps they were in the right place at the right time…but they did what they did. The album deserves all of the acclaim it got and more.

Here is why I think it’s easy to come down on the Pistols…they are still touring that one album as old, bitter (or pretending to be bitter) wash-ups. If they had known when it was time to stop dragging out their fame and dollars from these nonsense tours, they would be legends. In my mind they still are, but they’ve damaged the whole thing by being greedy.

    Again…just my take.

    Mike,

I definitely hear where you are coming from. Like I said, I would have been more inclined to read Blender’s opinion had it actually included a bit of THOUGHTFUL commentary, like your comment.

A lot of musicians let fame get the better of them and become greedy. A lot. They are always going to be legends to me simply because of their amazing influence in their genre. Even people who hate the Pistols cannot deny how influential they were in the formation of punk rock.

Thank you for your opinion. At least someone is able to look at it from a different perspective and actually make some sense! :)
