To be honest, I couldn’t help but smile when I played this album. From the very first track (Snocker Snog & Shag,) I was rockin’ out in my room. From the very first track (Snocker Snog & Shag,) I was rockin’ out in my room. The chorus is repetitive, but memorable – and not so monotonous that you want to switch to the next song.

The title track keeps with the theme of the album and offers rad guitar riffs that really set the mood. What’s more, Dolly Dongel’s backing vocals add a certain element to the song that makes you want to keep listening.

After listening through the entire album, my favorite song would have to be “Sorry Simon,” the fourth track on the album. Not only was it the first song that gave me a taste of what Jonny Dongel was all about, it has an awesome guitar opening. Plus, with lyrics like “I won’t fall for your ploy, for your sick and twisted joy, I know I’m not your idol, Sorry Simon,” it’s a catchy song that forces you to sing along.

“Mighty Irish” couples traditional British punk influences with Celtic punk sounds (think The Clash coupled with Flogging Molly.) It’s a decent song, and arguably the most unique on the album.

The rest of the album plays nicely, but the remaining tracks all sound very similar to one another. Not that that’s necessarily a bad thing – Jonny Dongel knows what works and offers a solid album punk fans can (and should) quickly add to their list of favorite CD’s.

Post from: News in Punk

Album Review: Mink

Album Review

Previews

mink

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of the yet-to-be-released self-titled debut album from Mink. (Who, I might add, has become my new favorite band – period!) The quintet includes Neal Carlson on vocals, Stella Mozgawa on drums, David Lowy on rhythm guitar and Nick Maybury and Grant Fitzpatrick on lead guitar and bass, respectively. Read on for my thoughts on their kick-ass debut album, and when you’ll be able to pick it up in stores. Before you listen to anything else, you MUST listen to Mink’s first single “Talk to Me,” which is already raging on more than 50 radio stations [...]
Post from: News in Punk

I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of the yet-to-be-released self-titled debut album from Mink.

(Who, I might add, has become my new favorite band – period!)

The quintet includes Neal Carlson on vocals, Stella Mozgawa on drums, David Lowy on rhythm guitar and Nick Maybury and Grant Fitzpatrick on lead guitar and bass, respectively.

Read on for my thoughts on their kick-ass debut album, and when you’ll be able to pick it up in stores.

Before you listen to anything else, you MUST listen to Mink’s first single “Talk to Me,” which is already raging on more than 50 radio stations across the country.

“New York Summer” will easily become your summer anthem, with rockin’ guitar riffs and amazing vocals that will have you singing along (or trying to at least!)

The band takes it down a notch with “Dematerialize,” a semi-sweet bad-ass not-quite-ballad that might have you reminiscing about a failed relationships, or hell, a lost goldfish – it’s just that damn good.

You’ll get over it quickly though, with the first track off the album, “Get It Right.” Boasting screeching vocals and a grunge punk feel, you won’t be able to keep from dancing all night.

The album drops August 28th, so be sure to pick up a copy from your local music store or Amazon. Until then, get your Mink fix by clicking over to their Myspace or official website.

Their debut album definitely kept me on my toes. I can’t wait to hear more from these guys. Go listen, already!

Post from: News in Punk
